The Story of Savage Garden
On May the 8th 1972 in a hospital in
Brisbane Australia, a little baby was born to the lucky couple June and Robert Hayes. They
decided to name their new-born son, Darren. A year later on July the 22nd 1973, in another
country, Daniel was born in a hospital in Essex. He was the third and youngest son of
Chris and John Jones. Daniel moved to Brisbane at the age of one and little did he know that he was going to find Darren in the same suburb as they both were living in, a suburb by the name of Logan. They each lived on one side of the Gold Coast Highway and therefore went to different high schools. Darren went to Mabel Park State High School and Daniel went to Shailor Park State High School. Darren loved school and especially subjects like Biology and Science, but unfortunately with all his talent and gift he still couldn't manage to get those numbers right in Maths. Daniel on the other hand didn't care much about school and eventually got the nickname "waggin", for obvious reasons. Darren's days in high school started to change when people noticed his voice. He began performing in school musicals and was about 1 guy out of 100 girls which made him quite popular and he gained a lot of admiration from his friends and the people around him. Daniel had gotten enough of school and graduated year 10 and had his mind set on playing in a band. Darren graduated at year 12 and went to Kelvin Grove University where he had his mind set on studying to become a pre-school teacher. Darren met Colby Taylor who was also studying to become a pre-school teacher and she claims that when they met it was Love at first sight. She is now the lucky girl who is Mrs. Darren Hayes. So you girls who want a piece of Savage Garden will just have to go for Daniel, while he is still single. Daniel had played a couple of years in various bands until he joined a band called "Red Edge" and they needed a lead singer. They put an ad in the local free music guide called "Time Off". The year was 1992, Darren saw this ad and decided to give it a shot. Darren was one among 20 other singers who answered the ad and was also the last one to audition. Darren says that this was the first time he had ever done anything like this and he hardly knew how to put up the mic stand. So he did what he came there to do, he sang. Daniel and Darren clicked immediately and Daniel was totally blown away by Darren's voice. After a while Darren and Daniel was tired of doing cover songs and decided to take their own way in the music industry, and they left "Red Edge". And to say it with their own words "The seeds of Savage Garden were sown". They started writing their own songs and tried to find a good name for their band. They recorded some of their songs and sent out about 150 demo tapes before they actually got signed by a record company. The picture of "Red Edge". Darren is in the front to the right of the picture, he's got blond hair here! Daniel is in the back with the red jacket and long hair! :-) That's the story to their success! Keep reading...

How they got the name "Savage Garden"?
As I said before, Darren is a huge fan
of Anne Rice's vampire novels and that is where the name of the band came from. Anne Rice
is known mostly for the Vampire Chronicles but writes other things that have to do with
ancient history, folk-lore, mythology and dark, DARK mysteries. "Savage Garden"
shows up in the second book called "The Vampire Lestat", where the vampire
Lestat and others of his kind describe the world as a savage garden. Darren and Daniel
both agreed to this name because it has a deeper meaning behind it. Darren says,
"Anne talks about the world as a savage garden. There are two levels. One is
beautiful but in the other, underneath, we're all savage beasts. We thought that was quite
fitting - but we don't want to sound too poncy. It's all just pop music!". Daniel
says, "Originally, we had about four names. Like Dante's Inferno and Bliss. But every
name we chose was already taken - it was really frustrating".
